From September 13 to 22, Canada celebrates “Welcoming Week,” and in Ottawa, the event began with a Canadian citizenship ceremony that brought together dozens of new citizens. Raina Ahmed and her family have waited for this moment for years. “We came here in search of safety, for our children’s future, for opportunities in our careers as doctors, and for a better life,” said Raina, who is originally from Sudan.
In a context of physician shortages in Canada, Raina, her husband, and their five children’s arrival as new Canadian citizens is encouraging news for the country. It is also a day that sisters Iris and Laris Nkunzimana will never forget. “It was a moment filled with pride,” said Iris. I can’t describe the emotion; it was simply overwhelming.” After seven years of waiting, they celebrated their new citizenship with family.
Over 60 people from 25 countries pledged allegiance to Canada during the ceremony. Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, led the oath. Citizenship judge Raina Sfeir shared her own experiences, highlighting what Canada has meant to her since she arrived from Lebanon in search of a better life for her family.
